recovering after being attacked by an inmate inside the mitchellville women's prison. the man was one of four corrections officers injured in the fight. it happened tuesday in the prison's dining hall. the union representing the officers says the incident could have been prevented if more staff been on duty. they also say officers should be able to carry pepper spray inside the prison. and here they got the pepper spray locked up in the captain's office and ya gotta run back and get permission to get it and by the time that's don the incident's over. somebody is an inmate could be dead. an officer could be killed. in a statement, the department committed to operating safe and secure facilities and will continue to work to improve our operations for the safety of all. however, officials declined to explain why corrections officers are not allowed to carry pepper spray. des moines police are

stabbing on the city's north side. officers were called to the 27 hundred block of boston avenue just after four this morning. when they arrived, they found a man in his 20's had been stabbed.. following what's believed to be some kind of fight at a party. police say he was in stable condition when he went to the hospital. no word on any arrests in the case. jurors in the murder trial of a boone man are hearing his side of the story... 41 year old alex fazzino is accused of killing his wife, emily, in january 20- 12. his hour long interview with investigators played out in court. in it, he says emily's addiction to prescription medication was putting stress on their marriage. he also talked about the night of her death and the shock of finding her dead in the bathtub. she was. she was dead. i mean, there was, because i wanted to give her cpr, and i don't know cpr, and

screaming, like as soon as i saw her, i was like, help! help! the defense argues emily fazzino accidentally drowned because of drug withdrawal symptoms. her father acknowledged that addiction on the stand, while her sister denied it. the trial resumes next week in decorah. a florida man faces federal charges connected to an abduction in ottumwa. 19 year old kevin ramirez was indicted on two counts of "enticement of a minor," and "possession of child pornography." police say he traveled to ottumwa to meet a 13 year old girl in october 20-15. after an amber alert was issued, they two were found in georgia. ramirez is due in federal court in des moines on monday. the iowa supreme court dismissed the case brought by a former d-c-i agent... the court says larry hedlund waited too long to appeal a judge's ruling in his wrongful

hedlund was fired just days after reporting a speeding suv carrying the governor in 20-13. he claims his firing violated public policy that protects officers enforcing the law. that part of the lawsuit was thrown out last year.. prompting hedlund's appeal. in three short weeks, des moines will host the n-c-double-a basketball tournament and one team is making sure its up to the challenge from the sidelines. channel 13's justin surrency shows us the police department's game plan the game plans for the ncaa tournament in des moines won't only be on the court... 'between logistics of transportation hotels, team functions, in arena aspects, its kind of been a collaborative efforts.' the police department will be providing a large downtown assist... 'one of the biggest challenges we have with this being at wells fargo is we are bringing thousands and thousands of people into a very

the bakken oil pipeline could replace some of the jobs... on march ninth the iowa utilities board will decide if the project moves forward. the developer says it would create two-to-four thousand jobs during construction. the pipeline would travel through 17- counties, but all of the landowners have yet to sign off on the project. governor branstad says he understands landowners want to protect themselves... but during a taping of iowa press added, "'if it were my land, i would obviously want to make sure that it was done in the right way, but i wouldnt be one that says no, you cant put a pipeline through the property." the iowa department of health is reporting two more cases of the zika virus. that brings the total to three in the state. the cases all involve women who recently visited central.. and south americas and the caribbean. the virus is carried by by a type of mosquito that is not found in iowa. the c-d-c issued a travel

a 12-year-old girl managed to escape and was unharmed.. authorities are still investigating the deadly shootings. a small community in kansas came together to remember the three people killed and 14 others injured in thursday's shooting. dozens of people attended the candlelight vigil in hesston. they released balloons in honor of the victims. police say cedric ford went on a deadly shooting spree inside excel industries, a lawn equipment manufacturing plant. ford was killed in a gunfight with police. workers say the excel plant family is "tight-knit" and they will overcome this tragedy together. "it's really become a really big family and a community thing. everybody is really close-knit, and it's really put a dent in what we became, and i really hope that we can grow closer together and form this bond. and nobody knows what we got and what we've gone through other than ourselves, you know, nobody's gone through what we've gone through, and i feel

'its basically coming together and fellowshipping and understanding each others stories.' the annual teen summit took on some heavy topics this year including white privilege, the 'n' word and the media's influence on society.... 'its so important that we give our young people safe and brave spaces to have these conversations to grapple with these issues to learn how to respectively disagree with each other and to just provide them opportunities to be leaders in their community.' emily lang helped start the urban leadership class at central campus, a class that has grown from just 30 students to more than 100 in three short years...the annual summit is a collaboration of everyone's hard work... 'we wanted to create an event that brought young people from all

social issues, and create art using one of the urban art forms and we wanted it to be youth led, youth produced.' the two day event offers town hall style meetings and artistic workshops like graffiti writing, street art and spoken word poetry... 'one really cool part about run dsm is its for youth by youth and i love the fact that theyre giving teenagers the power to have their voices heard.' jalesha johnson helped lead one of the townhalls and said the event has provided a safe place for teens to tackle social issues head on...
